Securing resilient and sustainable value chains for nutrition requires collaboration all the way

This Tuesday, we had the great pleasure of hosting the Danish Government’s Growth Team in our Copenhagen headquarters.

In the Growth Team, representatives from companies and organizations across industries came together to shape recommendations for how Denmark can secure future food and nutrition production, while strengthening its global leadership in environmentally-friendly practices.

As an active member and chair person of the Biosolutions part of the Growth Team, our CEO and founder Thomas G. Schmidt shared how agriculture and biotechnology each bring unique strengths, which combined have the potential to effectively meet the rising protein demand sustainably.

Demand for dairy proteins keeps rising, but current supply is not expanding at the same pace. In Europe in particular, supply growth is plateauing. According to industry insiders, a global gap of 20 to 30 million tons of milk is anticipated by as early as 2030. Growing demand requires complementary production methods.

During the visit, we were proud to showcase how our microbes can produce copies of the best milk proteins in a steel tank at competitive cost to the cows. This production technology is approved in the US and is already being scaled by several industrial players across the globe enabling the efficient and flexible production of exactly the proteins the market needs.

From dairy proteins produced with precision fermentation to new materials, proteins for agriculture or even mining, the opportunities for Denmark, Europe and the world are immense.

As the group toured our pilot plant, they saw how production of protein will be done in a precision fermentation protein facility – and why it is important to build such facilities in Europe for supply security and industrial competitiveness.

And of course, we gave our visitors a taste of the future with our clear BLG drink for a first-hand sense of the quality, functionality and potential of how we can deliver nutrition to the global population in .

A big thank you to the Growth Team members for the engaged discussions. Days like this show what is possible when we choose collaboration across sectors over competition. By joining forces across industries, we can secure the protein supply of tomorrow and prepare a safer future for Europe.
